Baku-APA. UN Secretary-general Ban Ki- moon on Friday called for a peaceful, credible and transparent presidential election in Mali, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

According to a statement issued by Ban's spokesperson, the UN chief "reiterates his call for a peaceful, credible and transparent process in line with the aspirations of the Malian people," as the African nation is set to hold the election on Sunday.

Ban called on all parties to ensure an orderly electoral process and encouraged all Malian voters to vote. He also stressed the importance of restoring constitutional order and promoting national dialogue and reconciliation in Mali.

The July 28 presidential election is considered a key step to restore Mali's territorial integrity and constitutional rule after a military coup on March 22, 2012 led to the months-long occupation of northern Mali by al-Qaida-linked rebels.
