A large group of people returning from a funeral ceremony were intoxicated early Saturday at the small village of Chitima in central Cahora Bassa district.

While the death toll was reported 69 on Monday, two more have since died.

According to hospital sources on Tuesday, 37 are also under medical care, seven of whom are in critical condition.

The woman making the liquor and her two children were also among the dead.

Although health officials have linked the contamination with crocodile bile, the real cause of intoxication remains unknown.

Luis Nota, one of the doctors attending to the victims said uncertainty over the cause of the intoxication makes treatment difficult and many victims may not respond to medication.

The hospital has sent the victims' blood and samples of the contaminated liquor to the capital Maputo for further probe.
