Police spokeswoman, Advera Senso, said the US-built four-seater Robinson R44 helicopter crashed in the Kipunguni area of the Indian Ocean port city of Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

"Two pilots from the police force, a civilian pilot and a police officer were in the ill-fated aircraft," she pointed out.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the accident.

The Howard G. Buffett Foundation, a private family foundation working to improve the standard of living and quality of life for the world's most impoverished populations, had donated the Robertson R44 helicopter to Tanzania.

On April 13, Tanzanian Vice President Mohammed Gharib Bilal and several top government officials narrowly escaped death when the military helicopter they were in crashed into a hangar.

The incident took place at the Tanzania People’s Defense Forces (TPDF) Air Wing section of Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Chief of Tanzania’s Defense Forces, General Davis Mwamunyange, said that Bilal and his entourage had been scheduled to start a tour of areas hit by floods in Dar es Salaam, when the mishap occurred.
