Baku-APA. Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday shot dead a senior military officer in Libya's northeastern city of Dernah and wounded his son, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"Unknown assailants killed Commander Adnan Alnobar of the Libya Shield forces after his evening prayer at the Sahaba Mosque in the city's downtown," said the source.

The bullets also hit the son of the commander, who was transferred to a local care center after sustaining severe wounds, the source added.

Alnobar was one of the first Libyan army officers to defect from the regime of ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi and the join the forces against him in the 2011 civil war, which ended with the death of the decades-long ruler and the formation of a transitional government.

But after ridding Gaddafi nearly two years ago, Libya is still far from enjoying tranquility and prosperity due to a weak central government, while the existence of various wartime local military councils poses continuous danger to the country's stability.

On Saturday, nearly 1,200 convicts escaped from al-Kuifiya prison in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi, the cradle of the uprising against the ex-regime.
