"The coup attempt failed, loyal forces are still controlling all strategic points," Army Chief of Staff General Prime Niyongabo said in a statement broadcast on state radio.
The president called on Burundians to "remain calm" in a message delivered via the presidential website and his Twitter feed.
Note that, the country’s president is participating in the African summit in Tanzania.
But despite this, residents of capital Bujumbura said heavy gunfire was heard in the city. The rebel leader, Major General Godefroid Niyombare, claims forces loyal to him are in control of a large area of the city.
