Baku-APA. Seven people drowned while seven others swam to safety when a boat they were traveling in capsized on a lake in a remote area of Zambia's Luapula Province, police said on Friday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The boat, which was moving from one Island to another on Lake Mweru, which is shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), capsized due to strong winds, according to Zambia Police deputy public relations officer Rae Hamoonga.
The police spokesperson said the accident happened on Monday night and among the dead was a baby.
Four of the deceased were Zambians while the other three were Congolese nationals, he added.
The boat, he said, was coming from Kilwa Island when it met strong winds and capsized.
All the deceased have since been retrieved from the lake. A team of Zambian officials, including security personnel, have been dispatched to verify the cause of the accident.
