Baku-APA. At least 18 persons lost their lives in an auto crash in northern Nigeria's Bauchi-Jos highway, local police said Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The accident occurred on Sunday after a DAF Truck and a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 18 passengers collided, Mohammed Haruna, the northeast Bauchi state police spokesman, said.
Haruna confirmed that the 18 passengers were certified dead by doctors at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital Teaching Hospital Bauchi and their corpses were deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The spokesman said that the case was under investigation and efforts were being made to ascertain the cause of the accident.
Nigeria records high fatality rates for road accidents mainly due to shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles and violation of traffic rules by inept drivers.
