Baku-APA. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, his Iranian and Turkish counterparts, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Abdullah Gul, held a closed meeting Wednesday on the Syrian crisis, Egyptian presidential spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Ali noted that Saudi Arabia's Deputy Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz did not attend the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of an Islamic summit in Cairo, as he went back to Saudi Arabia for private reasons.

Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia formed a quartet committee known as "the contact group" to help resolve the Syrian crisis.

As Saudi Arabia has missed previous quartet meetings, observers believe that the kingdom avoids meeting with Iran due to disagreements on Syria and other issues including alleged Iranian interference in the affairs of the Gulf states.
