Baku-APA. The 94-year-old former South African president Nelson Mandela continued to improve after doctors diagnosed him of having pneumonia, the presidency announced on Saturday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"Mandela was admitted to hospital during the late hours of 27 March 2013 due to a recurrence of pneumonia. Doctors advised that due to the lung infection Mandela had developed a pleural effusion which was tapped", the presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said on Saturday.

"This has resulted in him now being able to breathe without difficulty. He continues to respond to treatment and is comfortable," added he.

This is the second time for Mandela to be admitted to hospital this year. He was also admitted in December for the recurrent lung infection.

Maharaj added: "The presidency wishes to acknowledge and thank all who have been praying for and sending messages of support to Mandela and his family."

Mandela suffered from tuberculosis when he was incarcerated for 27 years by the apartheid regime.
