Azerbaijani court commences hearing on Afgan Mukhtarli’s appeal

Shaki Court of Appeal has commenced a hearing on the appeal filed by imprisoned journalist Afgan Mukhtarli, APA reports.

 

At the hearing lawyer Elchin Sadigov filed three petitions, asking the court to allow Mukhtarli to sit next to the lawyer, to commute his arrest to house arrest and to investigate the case partially.  

 

The court upheld the last petition. Other petitions were denied.

 

The hearing will be resumed on March 2.  

 

Mukhtarli was detained by officers of the State Border Service on May 29 last year in the territory of Balakan district while attempting to illegally cross the state border. At the time of his detention, Mukhtarli showed resistance. During the inspection, a large sum of money was found on him.

 

He is charged under Articles 318 (illegal border crossing), 206 (smuggling) and 315.2 (resistance or application of violence concerning the representative of authority) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

 

The Balakan District Court sentenced journalist Afgan Mukhtarli to 6 years in prison.
