"Currently, only 10% of the global population uses air transportation. This figure is expected to rise as incomes increase," Professor Rob Miller, Director of the Aviation Impact Accelerator at the University of Cambridge, said during an event on "Aviation Impact Accelerators and Leap Energy" at COP29, APA reports.

He noted that, despite this, aviation already accounts for approximately 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, and when considering non-CO2 impacts, its contribution to global warming rises to about 4%. Despite ambitious commitments from governments and the industry to achieve net-zero emissions in the aviation sector by 2050, the sector is dangerously off track. Without rapid and decisive action, we may miss the opportunity to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

"While global leaders have endorsed the vision of a net-zero carbon emission aviation sector, current efforts are weak in terms of both scope and speed. In some cases, proposed solutions could even exacerbate the crisis. For example, relying heavily on biofuels for jet fuel without managing their environmental impact can be a case in point," Rob Miller added.
