"The construction of tram lines requires a suitable area first and foremost," Rahman Humbatov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, said at a press conference on "Transport measures implemented in 2024 and plans for 2025," APA-Economics reports.
He noted that, unlike current buses, trams are intended for mass transportation: "Today, areas in Baku where the construction of tram lines could be beneficial have been identified. In general, we see the metro as the most efficient means of transportation for people in the city center. Plans regarding the locations of metro stations and other related matters have been prepared in accordance with the instructions of the President. Work is ongoing in this direction. The second issue is organizing the movement of people from the outskirts to the city center and within the outskirts themselves. This is also possible through the existing railway lines. There are sections of the railway lines that existed during the Soviet era and currently require some modernization. The proposals are that they also need to be restored. As a result, the need in that section will be met through the railway. We think that bus transportation between metro stations and other points should be more efficient. An additional component here is the tram line. Where we don’t have metro or railway access, for example, a tram line could be effective in areas such as from Mehdiabad direction to Azadlig Avenue, passing through Binagadi and heading toward 28 May. Another such direction is the "Seebreeze" zone, which has recently become one of the main attraction centers. As a newly developed area, the construction of a tram line here could be effective. Our research in these directions continues. The goal is not just the construction of a certain type of transport, but to focus on the most efficient use of our existing resources. Zones for the construction of tram lines are being identified, and work continues in this direction."
