Merkel’s old Volkswagen for sale on eBay

â€ŽBaku - APA-Economics. A worn-out Volkswagen Golf up for sale on eBay is attracting a little more attention after its savvy owner began marketing it as a celebrity item: a car whose first owner was German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Sky News Australia reported.

The registration papers show that Merkel, then a junior cabinet minister, owned the white vehicle from 1990 to 1995.

The anonymous Berlin vendor, selling the car in an eBay classified ad, rather than by auction, said he had been offered up to 10,000 ($A12,867) for the car, which has clocked up 190,000 kilometres and was bought with accident damages a year ago.

’It looks pretty authentic to me,’ said eBay spokeswoman Leonie Bechtoldt.

The 1990-model car is pictured on a street in front of Merkel’s official office building in Berlin.

The papers show the car was owned 1995-96 by Joachim Sauer, who Merkel later married.
