Baku - APA-Economics. India’s former telecommunications minister and senior industry executives have been charged over their suspected roles in rigging the award of telecoms licences, The Financial Times reported.

The action escalates the response to a corruption scandal that has both deeply embarrassed and paralysed the government.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday brought charges against Andimuthu Raja, the former minister, for his alleged role in the 2008 auction of 2G licences. An official audit found the mishandling of that auction had lost the state about $39bn in revenues.

The bureau also filed charges against Reliance Telecom, Swan Telecom, partner of the United Arab Emirates’ Etisalat, Unitech Wireless, partner of Norway’s Telenor, and eight individuals as co-conspirators.
