A MON-50 directional fragmentation mine was discovered in the Khojavand district, the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) told APA.
According to the report, an Armenian-made MON-50 anti-personnel mine was found during humanitarian mine clearance operations in the Tagaverd village of Khojavand district.
The mine, installed on a tree in a forested and densely vegetated area with difficult terrain, belongs to the directional fragmentation type. Its fragments have a destructive range of 45–55 meters. When activated, the mine disperses 400–550 cylindrical fragments, each 1 cm in size, at high speed. During the operation, it was also determined that the mine was connected to another nearby device using a tripwire.
Anti-personnel mines are designed to injure and kill personnel, while MON-50 fragmentation mines are intended for the mass destruction of living targets.
The explosive device, deemed too dangerous to transport, was neutralized on-site by ANAMA specialists using an electrical detonation method, in accordance with International Mine Action Standards, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.
ANAMA once again urged citizens to follow safety guidelines, pay attention to mine danger signs, and avoid entering unfamiliar areas.
