Sanan Shakharli,who was put on the international wanted list on charges of fraud with the appropriation of someone else's property through abuse of trust and deception (Article 178.3.2 of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic), was detained in the Republic of Colombia, APA reports citing the press service of the Ministry of Justice.
The Ministry sent a corresponding request for the extradition of the mentioned person to Azerbaijan, held negotiations with the Colombian authorities and provided all the necessary guarantees in accordance with international procedures; in this matter, the necessary support was provided from Azerbaijan's diplomatic corps.
The Colombian side, despite the lack of a legal framework in the field of extradition, taking into account the high authority of Azerbaijan as a reliable partner in the world and unconditional adherence to the principle of reciprocity, made a positive decision on the transfer, and for the first time extradition from Latin America was carried out.
Due to the lack of a direct flight from Colombia, S. Shakarli was brought to Azerbaijan on January 21 by responsible employees of the Office of International Cooperation and the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice in transit through Türkiye and, by court decision, was placed in the Baku pre-trial detention center.
The ministry noted that during 2023, 14 people were extradited to the country from Great Britain, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine.
