Upland Jews celebrate Hanukkah in Guba

Guba. Solmaz Mehdiyeva – APA. Upland Jews living in Guba Region of Azerbaijan celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish religious holiday. Residents of the Red Settlement in Guba welcomed the holiday with the religious ceremonies, APA northern bureau reports. Chief Rabbi of the upland Jewish community of the Red Settlement Elazar Nisimov said the upland Jews living in Guba would celebrate Hanukkah for eight days.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday commemorating the liberation of Jews from the slavery of the Roman Empire in 168 BCE. The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a special nine-branched candelabrum, one light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night.
