Azerbaijan arrests former police officers attacked exchange points for 10 years
The Ministry told APA that previous investigation into these crimes remained unsuccessful
According to the statement, the Prosecutor’s Office requested the Ministry on August 26, 2008 to deal with the investigation.
By tracking and scrutinizing, it was found that the majority of suspects worked at the «Bina» shopping center and some banks without being caught. In addition, it was known that the crimes were committed by professionals who were likely to be aware of the investigation and tracking methods employed by law enforcement bodies.
During the search-investigation by the Ministry of National Security, Mehdi Amiraliyev (born 1962), who once worked at the Yasamal Police Department, then, at the Department Fighting Banditism and Terrorism, then, worked as police chief at Narimanov District Police Station, then investigation deputy chief for Yasamal Police Department, then quitted police work in 1997, and Iraj Nasrullayev (born 1964), who worked at the Shusha Police Department and top investigator at the Main Department Fighting Organized Crimes, and dismissed in 1994, and an individual named Jeyhun Garayev (born 1971), were arrested on September 30, 2008, one TT pistol was found on them.
In their testimonies, they confessed that since 1998 they made more than 20 armed attacks on exchange offices in different locations in Baku, mainly in the «Bina»shopping center and stole a large sum of money. They also told that they carried out secret surveillance and committed crimes with their experience gained during their work in law enforcement.
The investigation and search are under way to look into all the facts and to find other participants in the crimes.
