Court hearing on case of ex-minister continues in Azerbaijan

Baku. Haji Zeynalov-APA. Baku Appeals Court continued the hearing on the appeal filed by ex-economic development minister Farhad Aliyev, former president of Azpetrol Group of Companies Rafig Aliyev and others. Judge Mirpasha Huseynov presided over the process. APA reports that Farhad Aliyev said the court decision was unjust. He said the court of first instance had not carried out proper and thorough investigation. Following this, public prosecutor Abdulla Yusifov asked time to prepare his speech. The hearing has been postponed till July 8.
Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Farhad Aliyev to 10 years and Rafig Aliyev to 9 years in prison. The defendants had faced charges under articles 179 (embezzlement), 192 (illegal business), 206 (smuggling), 213 (evasion from payment of taxes), 308 (abusing official powers), 311 (bribery) and 313 (service forgery) of the Criminal Code.
