“Friends, it has been a good run and I have enjoyed every moment. It's been an honor coaching the Super Eagles. It is however time to bow out,” Keshi posted on his official Twitter page on Tuesday.
On Monday, the 52-year-old said at a press conference after the defeat to France on Monday that it is “time for me to go back to my family and face fresh challenges.”
He took over the Nigerian national football team in 2011 and is reportedly close to becoming the new coach of South Africa.
Nigeria advanced to the World Cup last 16 with four points following its goalless draw with Iran and 1-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Super Eagles, however, lost their final group-stage match 3-2 to Argentina.
The Nigerians fought along and hard in their last 16 confrontation against France at Estádio Nacional de Brasilia, Brasília on Monday. They, however, received two goals from the French players in the last 11 minutes and were knocked out of the tournament.
Nigeria’s captain Joseph Yobo also retired from international football.
"This is it. I can look back on my career with great pride. I wanted to leave on a high for my country. Defeat by France was not the right way to go but I'm happy with all I've done for the national team,” the Fenerbahce defender said.
"It's time to give a chance to other people to come through. Our football has a bright future and I am confident this team can achieve success sooner rather than later," he added.
