The United States is seeking a compromise on the issue of Donbas, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, APA reports citing Ukrainian media.
Zelensky stated that the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas is Russia’s main demand, but such a condition is unacceptable for Ukraine. Therefore, according to him, the United States is looking for a compromise option acceptable to both sides.
The president noted that a Ukrainian delegation is already on its way to the United States, and it is also possible that European representatives will join the talks.
Zelensky emphasized that the size of the Ukrainian army should be at least 800,000 personnel. “The issue of arming and strengthening the Ukrainian army is under discussion,” he said.
According to the Ukrainian president, there are currently no signs that Russia is refusing to conclude a peace agreement. He added that U.S. officials say Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end the war.
Zelensky also commented on Putin’s recent statements, saying they indicate Russia’s intention to continue the war. “If Putin slows down the ‘diplomatic momentum,’ the United States will increase pressure on the Russian Federation,” he said.
He added that any war ultimately ends through negotiations, and it is important for Ukraine that this happens as soon as possible.
