Commenting on the proposal to transfer Russian assets blocked in the European Union to Ukraine, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said it would be an illegal confiscation, APA reports citing broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Slovak government press service.

"This is an illegal confiscation that will face enormous challenges in arbitration proceedings and a response from Russia," Fico noted. Slovakia, he added, opposes the transfer of Russian assets to Kyiv and any continued financing of military operations.

Fico also agreed with the proposal in the US-proposed peace plan for Ukraine to transfer these funds, with Russia's consent, to Kyiv exclusively for the country's reconstruction needs. Slovakia, the Prime Minister said, rejects the use of Russian assets blocked in the EU for weapons purchases. "The priority must be a peace plan, not a continuation of the war <...>. We are ready to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine," he noted.
