Thousands of demonstrators have already gathered in the capital, Paris.
Leaders of France’s trade unions, who organized the protests, are demanding higher taxes on the wealthy and the cancellation of planned cuts in the social sector.
The organizers plan to hold demonstrations in 240 municipalities across the country.
The Interior Ministry reported that by midday, a total of 85,000 protesters had been recorded nationwide.
