NATO aircraft have removed Russian aircraft from Estonian airspace, as this was not assessed as a direct threat, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said at a press conference while commenting on Russia's violation of the Alliance's airspace, APA reports.

"It was not necessary to shoot down the MiG aircraft. But if necessary, we will do what is necessary. This does not mean that we will always shoot down the aircraft immediately. We will first assess the situation. Russia's recent actions are either deliberate or clearly incompetent. We are not naive," the Secretary General noted.

Recall that on September 19, Russian military aircraft violated Estonian airspace. NATO scrambled Italian F-35s to repel the Russian aircraft.
