Donald Trump is reportedly considering offering $1 million (around £750,000 or €850,000) to each Greenlander if they vote to join the United States, according to reports citing the Daily Mail via APA.
The proposal comes after Trump held talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during which he discussed “the framework of a future deal” regarding control of the Arctic island, which he described as strategically important for American security.
Trump has ruled out using force to acquire Greenland and is instead reportedly focused on persuading the island’s population of 57,000 to secede from Denmark. If the offer were extended to all residents, the total cost could reach $42.5 billion (£42.5 billion).
While the plan may seem unusual, it is a fraction of the nearly $800 billion (£595 billion) the US spends annually on defense. The deal would likely require Greenland to hold a referendum, with a supermajority of around 60% needed to approve joining the United States.
If approved, the initiative could reduce Greenland’s economic dependence on Denmark and significantly reshape the island’s economy.
