German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) spotted in German airspace were not armed and were carrying out reconnaissance missions, APA reports.
At the same time, the origin of the drones found over Munich airport has not yet been established, Merz said in an interview with ARD TV channel on October 5.
"First of all, I can reassure the population: so far, we have not had a single incident involving the use of an armed drone. These are attempts at espionage and intimidation of the population," he said.
Merz stressed that measures to counter drones will be taken "cautiously and visionarily, but very consistently."
