“The Georgian government has never refused membership in the European Union," said Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili in an interview with the publication Deutsche Welle, APA’s local bureau reports.

He noted that the flags of the European Union were widely used at all major meetings of the ruling “Georgian Dream” party.

“Unfortunately, support is decreasing today. If 80 percent of Georgia’s population supports EU membership and 60 percent supports ‘Georgian Dream,’ what does this mean? It turns out that the majority of the population simultaneously supports both EU membership and ‘Georgian Dream.’ What is the difference between these two facts?” Kavelashvili added.

The head of state emphasized that Georgia will be ready for EU membership by 2030: “But we currently do not know whether the European Union’s position will change. They act based on double standards. Dialogue is key, but the European Union does not engage in dialogue with Georgia. Sometimes they recognize the government, and sometimes they do not, and this is absurd.”
