“Georgia predicts a significant increase in cargo flows along the Middle Corridor,” said Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Tamar Ioseliani, APA's local bureau reports.
According to her, container transportation increased by 17% last year, while overall cargo volumes grew by 18%.
“In terms of tonnage, the increase amounted to 7%. Container transportation by rail recorded a 33% increase. Georgian Railways, as well as ports, must be ready to handle the growing volumes of cargo, and this requires the implementation of appropriate infrastructure projects,” Ioseliani added.
The Deputy Minister noted that Georgian Railways plays a central role in the context of the Middle Corridor:
“Great attention is being paid to the modernization of railways. A project in this regard has been completed and was put into operation in December last year. The Georgian government has also made a decision to purchase new locomotives in 2026–2027.”
