Former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said today that President Emmanuel Macron should resign before his term ends amid the deepening political crisis in the country, APA reports, citing Politico.

Philippe led Macron's government from 2017 to 2020. Now, he said that his former leader "should call early presidential elections after next year's budget is adopted."

"I am not calling for an immediate and sharp resignation... but the president must take the initiative," Philippe said in an interview with French radio station RTL.

If Macron were to resign now, new presidential elections in France would have to be held within 20-35 days. His current term ends in the first half of 2027.
