EU leaders are meeting in Brussels where they will address the military escalation in the Middle East and the situation in Iran, including its consequences on the EU in terms of energy prices and energy security, APA reports.
According to the European Council, the leaders will also discuss the EU's strategic competitiveness, the next multiannual financial framework, security and defence and migration.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres is invited for a working lunch to discuss the deteriorating international situation and how the EU and its partners can work together to defend multilateralism.
EU leaders will discuss the situation in Iran and the region, as well as the EU's response to the geopolitical and economic fall-out, including, energy prices and energy security, means to protect EU citizens and companies and efforts to de-escalate tensions and increase stability in the region.
Previously, Presidents Costa and von der Leyen held a video conference meeting with leaders from the Middle East on the war in Iran, in which they emphasised the EU's commitment to partnership, security, and prosperity in the region.
In this context, the leaders will also address the worrying situation in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank.
Leaders will discuss how to boost Europe's competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy in the current global context.
The European Council is expected to set up a 'One Europe, One Market' agenda, with strategic guidance and ambitious deadlines for key strands of actions, such as, deepening and integrating the single market, further simplifying rules and reducing administrative burdens, ensuring affordable energy and achieving the energy transition, fostering Europe's industrial renewal, innovation and reducing dependencies and mobilising investment.
The leaders will hold an exchange of views on the next multiannual financial framework, the EU's long-term budget, including its contribution to EU competitiveness, and how to match the EU's ambitions with the appropriate funding.
