Inflation and the sharp rise in interest rates are being felt by ordinary Russians, while the Kremlin tightens control over the internet and information in the country, mezha.net reports.
In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that these findings are confirmed by European sources.
“Sanctions have a devastating impact on the Russian economy. With rising inflation and rapid increases in interest rates, the consequences of Russia’s war are paid from ordinary people’s pockets," said Ursula von der Leyen.
According to the head of the European Commission, the Kremlin is acting according to its usual script: tightening control over information and restricting access to the network.
Obviously, Russians feel as if they are living behind an iron curtain again – a digital iron curtain, as von der Leyen emphasizes.
“But if there is a lesson in history, it is that all walls eventually come down,” stressed von der Leyen.
