Montenegro could join the European Union by 2028, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a joint press conference with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, APA reports.
"I know that you want to become an EU member by 2028. This is an ambitious position, but we love ambition. If Montenegro remains focused and united, it can achieve this goal," the European Commission President said.
Ursula von der Leyen also welcomed Montenegro's entry into the "Single Euro Payments Area".
"Every time I come here, I feel that the heart of Europe beats in Montenegro," von der Leyen expressed her feelings.
It should be noted that Montenegro applied for EU membership in 2008.
In 2012, it began negotiations with the EU for this purpose.
