British intelligence officer Blaise Metreveli was appointed head of MI6, becoming the first woman to hold the position, APA reports citing The Times newspaper.

She took office on October 1, succeeding Richard Moore, who led the secret service for five years.

At 48, Metreveli is the youngest head in MI6's history, which dates back to 1909.

She began working in foreign intelligence in 1999. Metreveli spent most of his time in various locations in the Middle East.

The report also states that she is fluent in Arabic and lived in Saudi Arabia as a child.
