A carcass of a wild boar infected with African swine fever found in a region of Poland where several large pig farms are located has caused alarm in the country, APA reports, citing RMF24.

The infected boar carcass was found in the Łódź Voivodeship, near the city of Piotrków Trybunalski. Examinations showed that the animal was infected with African swine fever. It is noted that this disease does not transmit to humans, but poses a serious threat to all pigs.

The country’s Ministry of Agriculture stated that no cases of African swine fever had previously been recorded in this area.

“According to the veterinary inspectorate, the remains of the dead animal infected with African swine fever were deliberately brought into the area where pig farms are located,” the ministry said.

“We do not rule out a provocation — including one with an ‘eastern trace’ (Russia — ed.). This is a very serious threat to Polish business and food security,” emphasized Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski.
