Italian police arrests more than 300 members of Ndrangheta mafia

Rome – APA. Italian police carried out an operation to arrest more than 300 members of the ’Ndrangheta, the crime syndicate in the southern region of Calabria. According to APA, it was the largest police operation against mafia in recent years. 3,000 police was involved in the operation. The Ndrangheta is one of Italy’s four large organized crime syndicates, along with the Camorra in the area of Naples, Cosa Nostra in Sicily and the smaller Sacra Corona Unita in the southeastern region of Puglia. The group has been operating in Calabria since 19th century and until 1975 it didn’t extend its activity out of the region. But in recent years, the Ndrangheta has taken an active part in mafia association, murder, arms offences, trafficking, extortion and other crimes. It has killed tens of politicians, including Vice President of the Regional Assembly of Calabria Francesco Fortugno.
