According top him, Romania stands ready for mutually advantageous cooperation with Azerbaijan which would extend beyond the oil and gas sector: “We believe we can work closely together in a number of directions within the non-oil sector of Azerbaijan’s economy, such as: ICT, transport, agriculture, etc.”.

“In this regard we put many hopes in the future activity of the Joint Intergovernmental Commercial-Economic and Technical-Scientific Commission, expecting that its fifth session, to be held later this year, will lead to further development of economic ties and growth of trade between our states”, he added.

Romania is also interested in developing cooperation with Azerbaijan in areas such as education, health, cooperation in emergency situations, law-making, reform of judicial system etc.: “Due to geographical similarities, we encourage cooperation in the agro-industrial sector and in the field of organic agriculture, including exchange of genetic material of agricultural plants, exchanges of experience between farmer. But, of course, energy issues constitute a strategic priority of bilateral economic cooperation. Both countries recognize the importance of Southern Corridor as a major initiative in the field of energy infrastructure which will contribute to diversifying energy supplies and transit routes towards European Union”.

Ciobanu noted that, Romania tried to bring its contribution to European energy security by fully supporting Nabucco, PEOP and AGRI LNG projects and by building gas interconnections with Hungary and Bulgaria: “AGRI project is being implemented according to the Calendar approved at the General Meeting of Shareholderts of AGRI LNG Project Company. In April 2012, British Penspen LTD was selected to prepare the feasibility study. Completion of feasibility study represents a priority for Romanian Government. The feasibility study should be completed in the upcoming months. Azerbaijan is also interested in speeding up this process. AGRI project is complementary to other Southern Corridors’ project and brings an added value to the European energy security”.
