Taner Yildiz: “Turkey continues efforts for realization of Nabucco”
# 23 January 2012 10:37 (UTC +04:00)
After the event on “Turkey-Georgia energy and investment arena” Taner Yildiz has held press conference with Georgian energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri.

“We offered Trans Anadolu gas pipeline as alternative for realization of Shah Deniz -2 project. Azeri gas will be transported to Turkey and Europe in 2017. But, EU countries also must participate in solution of gas transport safety”.

T. Yildiz noted that, both Turkey and region would benefit from realization of Nabucco, ITGI, TAP or Trans Anadolu projects.

Note that, the $6 billion Nabucco pipeline project is expected to link energy-rich Central Asia to Europe through Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2009, so that the pipeline could go on stream in 2012. Nabucco is planned to be a 3,300-kilometer pipeline running from the Caspian Sea via Turkey and the Balkan states to Austria. The pipeline is expected to transport some 31 billion cubic meters a year of natural gas to the EU from the Middle East and Asia to reduce the bloc’s reliance on Russian supplies. Nabucco, planned as an arm of the South Caucasus pipeline, is seen as a rival to the gas pipeline deal clinched by Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, the region’s major gas producers, in May, 2007. Russia does not regard the Nabucco project as a rival or alternative to the South Stream project, which is designed to carry gas to southern Europe from Russia.
