Matthew Bryza: Azerbaijan likely to produce 50 billion cubic meters of gas within 10-15 years

Matthew J. Bryza, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs addressed the forum. He stated that Russian Gazprom company provides about 25 percent of total European gas supplies
Mr. Bryza positively assessing Turkey-Greece-Italy and Nabucco pipelines underlined that these routes will be of great significance in future.
“Developing these routes was not necessarily an attempt to freeze Gazprom out of the market, but would provide a viable alternative supply and thus ensure that Gazprom would have to participate in the market as a commercial company rather than a political tool. We are convinced that Azerbaijan alone has sufficient reserves to fill the Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline and provide the first phase of Nabucco pipeline,” he said.
Matthew Bryza stated that later stages of Nabucco pipeline will require more gas and supplies could eventually come from Iraq.
“Azerbaijan has perspective opportunities for importing gas to Europe. As to our forecast, Azerbaijan is likely to produce 50 billion cubic meters of gas within 10-15 years. 40% of it is for internal use and supply Turkey’s demand to natural gas. We will be able to realize the first stage of Nabucco project, if Azerbaijan supplies European countries with 30 billion cubic meters gas till 2020,” he said.
Mr. Bryza said that Baltic countries will be able to solve alternative energy source problem on the account of Norway gas.
“There has to be a competition, but not monopolism in such issues,” he said. /APA/
