“Turkey and the US have serious alliance relations. Disapproval of the bill on the so-called genocide is very important for Turkey,” chief of the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) Can Peker told APA’s Turkey bureau.
He underlined that it is difficult to forecast Turkey’s steps in case the bill is adopted.
“It should not be forgotten that Turkish senior officials negotiate with the US officials. I think that Turkey and the US will reach an understanding. The congress’s decision may harm Turkey-US relations, but the relations between the two countries will continue,” he said.
TESEV chief also assessed the influence of the Congress’s decision on Turkey-Armenia relations.
“The factor of Azerbaijan is very important here. If Armenia-Azerbaijan relations are normalized a little bit, Turkey may take necessary steps,” he said.
Asked how these relations can normalize, while Armenia continues to occupy Azerbaijani territories, Can Peker said:
“Even in this case, if Azerbaijan and Armenia compromise, Turkey can at least open borders”. /APA/
