Baku hosts international symposium “Natural cataclysms and global problems of modern civilization”

Symposium aims to organize monitoring of resources of natural disasters in modern level and use experience and advanced technology of world countries in this field. Scientific figures of U.S, Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Brasilia, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Japan, Turkey and Indonesia are in the scientific committee of symposium. Nearly 100 scientists of 35 countries are participating in symposium. Azerbaijan Emergences Minister Kemaleddin Heydarov addressing the event gave information about the measures taken in Azerbaijan against natural disasters lately.
Minister stated that 8-9 magnitude seismic zones comprise 60% of Azerbaijan. He stated that 4 million Azerbaijani populations are living in these areas.
Minister stated that natural cataclysms seriously damage economics of the country as well as other disasters.
“12-13% of country populations are living in dangerous regions. More than 200 residential buildings, railway line of 300 km, automobile lines of more than 1000 km face natural disasters regularly. Landslide ranks first among natural disasters. Landslide takes a toll on the administrative and residential buildings in Baku, Shamakhi, Agsu, Khizi, Altiagaj, Lerik and other regions. President of the International Academy of Science (IAS) Walter Kofler said that Azerbaijan went through hard times. Mr. Kofler proposed to establish a mutual scientific commission among Pakistan, Indonesia and Azerbaijan in the sphere of natural cataclysm and exchange information on recent happenings adding that IAS is ready to cooperate with Azerbaijan. He also offered to sign a memorandum of understanding on the cooperation between various institutes.
Communication and Information Technologies minister Ali Abbasov spoke about information technologies’ role in preventing natural disasters and underlined that his ministry pays a significant role in warning in this sphere. Mr. Abbasov stressed that Emergencies and Communication and Information Technologies ministries work together in this field./APA/
