Oppositional parties support United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party’s proposals on amending constitution

Chairman of United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Gudrat Hasanguliyev said that their proposals reflect proportional representation, participation of the parties winning the parliamentary elections in the formation of the government, and it will cause active participation of the parties in the country’s life. Gudrat Hasanguliyev said the proposed project does not limit the president’s authorities and the process will be implemented through stages. Hasanguliyev said that the proposals reflect application of mixed electoral system – 50% Majority Election System and 50% Proportional Representation System in the parliamentary elections in 2010, proportional representation in 2015 and increasing the number of parliamentarians by 150. Chairman of United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party said that approval of the proposals will increase the role of parties in the country’s political life.
Head of Musavat Party Central Executive Board Arif Hajili expressed his hope that New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) will be interested in adopting these proposals.
“If this system is applied, political activeness and influence of both YAP and other parties will expand,” he said.
He noted that the president’s preserving authorities is not antidemocratic.
“President’s authorities should not prevent improvement of democratic values. For example, the US president has strong power, but the country is ruled democratically,” he said.
Arif Hajili also said that Musavat will accept this proposal.
Chief of Azerbaijan National Democratic Party Isgandar Hamidov offered setting up a working group for this purpose. Functionaries of other parties also supported proposals on amending Azerbaijani Constitution. /APA/
