Thomas Hammerberg: Azerbaijan’s cooperation with Council of Europe caused progress in human rights sphere in the country

The cooperation between Azerbaijan and Council of Europe in this sphere positively influenced on this process, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammerberg said, APA reports.
He said that he will especially touch on the release of imprisoned journalists during his officials meeting.
“We want to remove article on defamation from Criminal Code first of all. Though this article remains in the Criminal Code of several CE member countries, it should be removed later or sooner,” he said.
Mr. Hammerberg commenting on the monitoring results in detention places said that detention condition of the prisoners has been improved, but problems on heat and ventilation systems remain yet.
He also commented on the proposal on Council of Europe’s appointing special rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
“Proposals on appointing a special rapporteur on political prisoners, on media are voiced in Azerbaijan. But I must say that CE already has Human Rights Commissioner. Those who want to achieve progress in this field should assist to broaden activity of the Commissioner,” he said. /APA/
