Thomas Hammerberg: I will touch upon the most significant human rights related issues in Armenia

The Commissioner visited detention place #2 of Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service in Ganja and voiced content, “The condition of the detention place is good, all needed measures have been taken against tuberculosis. I highly appreciate the fact that the detention place’s guidance checks up every new prisoner to find out if or not he or she is infected with tuberculosis.”
The Commissioner said he discussed a number of issues with Ganja executive power head Eldar Azizov adding the discussions focused on who is responsible to make decisions regarding social-oriented expenses.
The visitor stressed positive changes in the work principles of courts, “New judges are appointed in the courts, judges’ salaries are raised. It is a very important step towards preventing corruption. Establishment of regional appeal structure in Ganja is one of positive steps. It makes enable that people appeal to court of next instance without traveling to Baku.
Thomas Hammerberg said that he intends to visit Armenia.
“I plan to visit Armenia in October 2007. But I do not want to detail on this visit and want to make my visit very professional. I can assure you that I will touch upon the most significant human rights related issue there,” he stressed. /APA/
