“Establishing relations between armed forces and civil society is very important. If the civil society supports the army, great results can be achieved,†former Dutch Defense Minister Willem F. van Eekelen said at the meeting on “Support to social welfare of servicemen and international prospectsâ€, APA reports.
He said that they are ready to discuss the best practices on democratic control of armed forces with Azerbaijani government.
“Azerbaijan has been admitted to the Council of the Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the main office of which is based in Geneva. Public control of armed forces does not mean to publicize everything. Confidentiality is to be maintained to some extent. Servicemen’s right of association produced positive results in a number of countries, therefore it should be applied in Azerbaijan as well,†he said. /APA/
