Human Rights Watch executive director: National Press Day is a favorable chance release imprisoned journalists

Mr. Roth said that Human Rights Watch started operating in Azerbaijan soon after the country gained its independence. He said that the organization tries to be objective and unbiased while preparing reports on all countries.
The executive director said he met with head of President’s Administration, Justice Minster, Interior Minister, Foreign Minister and Prosecutor General.
Mr. Roth said that his visit was connected with some actions that restrict freedom of media in Azerbaijan. He said the organization is concerned about it and about the imprisoned journalists as well.
Kenneth Roth said he debated it, problem of political prisoners and torture on prisoners during his visit. The executive director underlined that they mainly debated on imprisoned journalists.
“I recommended government official to release seven imprisoned journalists. Azerbaijan has undertaken commitment on respecting freedom of media and speech. Actually, Azerbaijan is devoted to freedom of speech. But arrest of seven journalists restricts freedom of speech. I recommended the officials to declare a moratorium. Journalists have to be fined for slander not arrested,” he said.
Mr.Roth called the upcoming National Press Day-22 July a favorable chance to release seven imprisoned journalists.
“I offered that the Pardon Commission give recommendations to the head of state for the release of the imprisoned journalists. I think all the arrested journalists should be freed. This would be the victory of not only those journalists but also the whole Azerbaijan,” he concluded.
Human Rights Watch top official also said he gave recommendations to the government on ending of harassment of journalists, “We are concerned about the assaults, particularly the assassination of Elmar Huseynov. The assassination should be thoroughly investigated.”
The visitor adding that he touched on the issues on torture facts with the government representatives said the Prosecutor General presented him the list of representatives of security agencies who were held accountable regarding use of torture.
“We think holding accountable of those engaged in using torture is a message to the society on the unacceptability of using torture,” he concluded. /APA/
