GUAM head of states holds briefing on Baku summit
President stressed the importance of settling conflicts in the territories of GUAM member sates. Azerbaijan President said the settlement mechanisms of the conflicts should base upon international legal norms. “All states recognize territorial integrity of Georgia, Moldova and Azerbaijan. Separatist regimes are not recognized by any state, GUAM member states have gained influence already. We possess clear positions. We call for stopping invasion against out states. Each of these states has already developed. So, it will not be hard for us to defeat illegal regimes.â€
Yuschenko emphasized that political dialogue is important in settling conflicts.
“There will be no alternative to thatâ€. Ukrainian President said on of the debated issues within GUAM was establishing peacekeeping forces. â€If there is an agreement on this it should be military body operating within the mandate of OSCE and the UN. I want to say on behalf of Ukraine that settling conflict is important for us. These frozen conflicts threaten security of the region.â€
Moldova’s Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev claimed this conflict was inspired and supported from outside. “The whole world is fighting against terrorism. We succeeded to include this issue into the UN agenda. We want the conflicts to be settled soon, but it is to be achieved through peace talksâ€.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said it is impossible to manipulate with borders of states. In our times foolish and outrageous man can think that it is possible to detach Ossetia from Georgia. It was impossible for thousand years and it will not change since today. Ossetians are our citizens. We love them. We are planning to live with Ossetians in the next thousand years. Every condition is created for South Ossetians. This problem’s settlement needs time. There is no frozen conflict in Ossetia. Some criminal bands are operating there. We will give Ossetians everything they wish. It is the matter of some months. We do not want to delay it,†the President underlined./APA/
