Azerbaijani Ambassador addresses OAS General Assembly session

Azerbaijani delegation led by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and permanent observer at the Organization of American States Yashar Aliyev attended the session.
The participants addressed the central issue of the General Assembly, “Energy for Sustainable Development.”
Ambassador Yashar Aliyev addressing this issue said Azerbaijan is one of the birthplaces of the oil industry. 1848 event marked the first time in history of the world that an oil well was successfully drilled and completed. He touched on the growth of energy sector, the country’s presence in large-scale regional oil and gas projects, economic achievements and stressed Azerbaijan’s leading role in ensure of energy security.
He said Azerbaijan has recently become oil and gas producer and also an important country in terms of transit of energy resources.
Azerbaijani Ambassador also spoke about the measures led by President Ilham Aliyev for efficient use of energy resources to achieve sustainable development of the economy and also the promotion of non-energy sectors. He said Azerbaijan is ready to cooperate with the OAS member states to exchange experience in this field.
During the session, Ambassador Yashar Aliyev held bilateral meetings with the leadership of the Organization of American States and delegations from Latin America region.
Azerbaijan has got the status of permanent observer at the OAS since 2002.
The General Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of the Organization. OAS has 35 permanent member states and 60 permanent observer states. /APA/
