US and European stocks rise

Baku-APA-Economics. US stocks charged higher on Monday as Wall Street kicked off a new month energised by strong results from oil giant ExxonMobil, AAP reported

In late afternoon trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had added 109.28 points, or 1.09 per cent, to 10,176.61.

The Nasdaq composite was 21.15 points higher, by 0.98 per cent, at 2,168.50 while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index had gained 13.13 points, or 1.22 per cent, at 1,087.00.

European shares moved higher on Monday on the back of encouraging US manufacturing figures and robust results from oil giant ExxonMobil.

London’s FTSE 100 index of leading shares gained 58.89 points, or 1.14 per cent to close at 5,247.41 points.

The German DAX gained 45.69 points, or 0.81 per cent, at 5,654.48 points.

The CAC 40 index in France rose 22.55 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 3,762.01 points.

Japanese stocks ended narrowly mixed on Monday as the auto sector remained under pressure following safety recalls by Toyota and Honda.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange’s benchmark Nikkei-225 index rose 6.98 points, or 0.07 per cent, to 10,205.02.

Hong Kong shares rose 0.61 per cent, reversing early losses on bargain hunting, while mainland Chinese markets were hit by fears of credit tightening.

Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index added 121.76 points to end at 20,243.75.
