US markets drop while European stocks up

Baku- APA-Economics. Wall Street was moderately lower on Monday despite good news on retail sales, AAP reported.
In mid-afternoon trade, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 7.49 points, or 0.07 per cent, at 10,512.61.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was down 2.12 points, or 0.19 per cent, at 1,124.36, while the Nasdaq composite index was 1.8 points lower, or 0.08 per cent, at 2,283.89.
LONDON - European stock markets climbed on Monday after a remarkable turnaround from a chaotic start to the year, with Frankfurt climbing to its highest level since the beginning of the global financial meltdown.
The London market was closed on Monday. On Thursday, the FTSE 100 index gained 30.03 points, or 0.56 per cent, to 5,402.41 points.
FRANKFURT - Germany’s Dax added 45.48 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 6,002.92.
PARIS - The CAC 40 index gained 34.42 points, or 0.88 per cent, to 3,947.15.
TOKYO - Japanese stocks closed up 1.33 per cent on Monday, striking a four-month high on the back of a weaker yen and upbeat economic data.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange’s benchmark Nikkei-225 index rose 139.52 points to 10,634.23, its best finish since August 26.
HONG KONG - Hong Kong shares edged 0.17 per cent lower in thin holiday trade on Monday, as property stocks fell after a government land auction for residential development failed to meet expected prices.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index lost 36.78 points to 21,480.22.
