On Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan named Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz as Türkiye's ambassador to Damascus, with Yilmaz assuming the post after Official Gazette publication, APA reports.

Ankara had delayed the return of an ambassador because of concerns about Hayat Tahrir al-Sham , and the formation of a new Syrian government under Ahmed al-Sharaa that sidelined HTS cleared the way.

Nuh Yilmaz brings an intelligence and diplomatic background, having spent a decade at the National Intelligence Organization , directed SETA's Washington, D.C. office, and served as deputy foreign minister attending Hakan Fidan's Syria meetings.

Ankara's decision ends a long diplomatic hiatus and marks the reestablishment of full diplomatic relations with Damascus, Syria, where Burhan Koroglu had been the highest-ranking Turkish official.

Observers say the appointment signals an important diplomatic step as Turkey reopened its embassy in Damascus soon after Bashar al-Assad’s ouster and strengthened ties economically and militarily.
